Chōchin are a type of lantern used traditionally in Japan as lights. A spiral frame of split bamboo is wrapped in paper or silk to protect the flame inside from the wind. Plastic version with electric lights are often used as novelties. "Date" can mean showy, flashy, or fashionable, so a datechochin is an ostentatious lighting decoration.
