| - The Sheriff of Smallville (first name Caleb, no last name given) was an older, be-whiskered fellow who was called in by Dick Tracy to hold Doc Codd in custody while Tracy pursued the fugitive Krome. The Sheriff had a cordial relationship with Codd, and the two men passed the time playing checkers. The Sheriff even let Codd remove the shells from his shotgun. Codd bribed the Sheriff to help him escape, offering him large sums of cash if he would help Codd change the tires on his car to ones filled with currency and treasury bonds. The Sheriff, dazzled by the money, agreed. Before Codd could make his escape, though, Tracy returned and found the money concealed in the tires as well as on the Sheriff’s person. Tracy arrested both men, leaving their fates up to the State’s Attorney.
