Magical writing sets are tools used to create scrolls. The player uses the set, along with a blank scroll, and is given the option to specify a type of scroll to create — which must be one that the player has previously read. If the attempt is successful, the result is a scroll of the player's choosing — possibly coupled with the loss of points of the Mana stat. Each set has a limited number of charges, and it cannot be recharged; upon the use of the last charge, the set disappears. Blank scrolls can be obtained by dipping unwanted scrolls in plain water.

Desirability
| - Magical writing sets are highly useful for PCs of some classes: monks in particular, and members of magical classes as well. Since they can produce desirable scrolls like chaos resistance, protection, and education, they remain useful late in the game.

Description

Each set has a limited number of charges, and it cannot be recharged; upon the use of the last charge, the set disappears. Blank scrolls can be obtained by dipping unwanted scrolls in plain water.
More valuable scrolls are likely to extract a price in the form of points of Mana from the PC who attempts to write them. Monks are exempt from this cost; for Wizards, it appears to be less than for most other classes. Scrolls of chaos resistance are the most difficult to create; scrolls of education are second. Attempts at creating scrolls are more likely to succeed, and may extract a smaller price, if both the magical writing set and the blank scrolls used are blessed beforehand. Creating scrolls also costs dozens of power points; if the PC doesn't have enough, hit points will be lost instead.
Despite these limitations, magical writing sets can be a useful, if costly, way to gain needed corruption removal, and an excellent source for other rare and useful scrolls, like education, danger, protection, and increase melee damage.
