Redoaks were tall Deepwoods trees with diamond-shaped leaves, which turned scarlet at the end of winter. Their branches sprouted one after the other around the tree, resembling a spiral staircase. Slaughterers burned redoak for use in their furnaces, and the redoak chippings in the smoke gave them their blood-red skin.
