Town started brightly, Stephen Hunt putting the ball in the back of the net in the fiifth minute but narrowly ajudged to have been offside. Southampton then went ahead with virtually their first attack, Tommy Smith producing a fine saving tackle to prevent Ward-Prowse but inadvertantly setting up Shane Long who produced an instinctive finish.
