The only surviving child of King Ondoher, Fíriel married Arvedui (S. "Last-king") of Arthedain. With the death of her father and brothers on the Dagorlad in T.A. 1944, her husband put forth a claim to throne of Gondor based on his descent from Isildur and Firiel's birthright. Citing the ancient Dúnadan laws of Númenor, Arvedui noted that Adan tradition called for Ruling Queens. Gondor's did not, however, so Arvedui's argument on this point failed. So did his assertion that Isildur's heirs should stand in the lines of both Arnor and Gondor, for the Men of Gondor continued to look upon Anarion's descendants for their Kings. Arvedui's attempt to unite Arthedain and Gondor failed and, after a year of interregnum, the Warlord Eärnil II took the throne of the South Kingdom. Firiel remained at Fornost Erain until T.A. 1974, when she was forced to flee before the Witch-king's victorious army. She perished with her husband a year later when their ship sank in the Ice Bay of Forochel. Thus, a woman of Anarion's line was the last Queen of Arthedain.
