| - The malleability of the Flood xenomorph is largely chaotic, and even on a genetic level there appears at first glance no physical, biological or scientific reason why the organisms function at all. What unites them is a shared consciousness that virtually holds them together, what has been codenamed by the UNSC as a Gravemind, but was known by the Forerunners as a Compound Intelligence. The individual Gravemind known as the Titan was formed from biomass collected by the Flood during the beginning of their conquest of the Milky Way galaxy 100,000 years ago, and was a part of a network of such organisms that coordinated themselves as a single entity to unify the Flood into an unimaginably dangerous and virtually unstoppable force that overwhelmed even the Forerunners. Towards the end of the war, however, before the Halo Array was activated, a Forerunner outpost managed to capture one of these entities, isolating and quarantining it on an abandoned colony known to them as ACM-77-1180-b, later termed "Procyon B" or "Minorca" by UNSC colonists. Its presumed-psychokinetic influence beyond a few meters was interrupted by a Forerunner crystal, rendering all of the local Flood forces inert, or at worst reducing it to the manageable Feral stage. With it unable to act, or think coherently, the Forerunners established a military outpost and research faclity called the The Labyrinth on the planet to study the Flood under controllable conditions, among other things, sending some samples to the Halo's for further analysis. Over the next 100,000 years, the Labyrinth would continue to study the Titan, even after the passing of its creators. The Titan's thought processes interrupted by the crystals effects, the temporal and spatial distortions that were a byproduct of the unusual properties of the crystal, interfering with its uplink with the collective, it was forced to remain dormant until 2551, when the UNSC and Covenant military forces arrived, bringing their war to Minorca. The destruction of the New London Orbital Tether produced minor damage to the Labyrinth, but it was concentrated on the control and security measures of the facility. With its more coherent parts, the Titan attempted to further destroy the facility and the effects it had on the Titans thought processes, eventually forcing a brief truce between a small UNSC force and a team of Covenant special forces commandoes.
