Based on the preceding Boadicea class, these two ships were also designed as scout cruisers, operating with destroyers. However, by the time they were completed, the newer destroyers had all been switched to turbine engines and were at least two or three knots faster than the scout cruisers. They still serve with destroyers, as there is no other field where they could be of better use, but there are talks about converting them to mine layers.
