  • Hitchhiking is very common in Israel. It is most often done at major road junctions. Such a stop is known in Hebrew as a "Trempiada", from the German "trempen", to hitchhike. Trempiadas often also have bus stops at the same location. Hitchhiking is done by pointing to the ground with the hand far from the body, instead of raising a thumb. Variations exists such as pointing straight down while bobbing the hand up and down to indicate a short distance hitch, or pointing right or left to indicate a desire to turn right or left at the next major junction. At a very large trempiadas, it is not uncommon for people to stand at different locations depending on their destination of choice. The precise locations (sometimes only a few feet apart) often coincide with a bus stop sign or common knowledge among the locals.
