- A minority of the Gortokians Subterranean race formed a religious cult which worshiped a demon, whose identity has not yet been determined. This demon transformed his worshipers into a new race of Subterraneans known as the Lava Men, who abandoned the Gortokian civilization. Lava Men are humanoid in height and form, but they have red skins of rock-like consistency. Upon death, a Lava Man immediately decomposes into dust. The most influential living shaman of the Lava Men is Jinku.
- In the late 1960s, Superman and Lois Lane encountered a race of Lava Men that were spawned in lava that was released from a volcano near a small village in Mexico. It started with just one Lava Man, until Superman punched it, causing it to break into small pieces and then those pieces formed into other Lava Men. Superman used water to return them to their natural non-living state, allowing them to return to the form of lava.

In the 1980s, Solderath, the King of the Lava Men, a man with the desire to conquer the surface, lead an army of his people to Ocean City, where they came up out of a volcano. It was his hope to burn everything and make the surface just as hot as it is in the molten center of the Earth. But he and his army are stopped by Super Friends members Superman, Aquaman and Wonder Woman.
