Imamura's film became a major influence on the new Pink film genre, of which 24 films were produced in 1963, the second year of the genre's existence. The modern yakuza film genre gained popularity in 1963, and surpassed the traditional jidai-geki over the next decade. This year NHK produced the first of its annual television Taiga Dramas: A Glorious Life (花の生涯 Hana no shogai).
