The name is derived from the Chinese 帝 dì meaning 'emperor' and 龙 / 龍 lóng meaning 'dragon'. "Di", "emperor", refers to the relationship of this animal to Tyrannosaurus rex, the "king" tyrannosaurid. "Long" is used to name Chinese dinosaurs in much the same way that the Latin -saur(us) is in the West. The specific name, paradoxus, is a Latinisation of the Ancient Greek παράδοξον meaning 'against received wisdom'.

- The Dilong (地龍) is a powerful B.O.W created from an unknown caterpillar species that was infected with the Hyper-Veronica Virus. The Hyper-Veronica Virus evolved the caterpillar's hairs into very strong spikes. These spikes can be launched at long distances and are capable of penetrating through two centimeters of Tank armor, due to the Dilong’s strength. Since Dilong are considerably slower than the lesser Gouchong, they will also burrow underground and wait for enemies to reach their attack range.
- Location: Yixian Formation, Liaoning Province, China Age: Early Cretaceous Dilong or "imperial dragon" is an early representative of the tyrannosaurs and also the first of this group discovered with feathers. Its remains were found in the Yixian Formation in Liaoning Province, China: the same location that yielded most of China's feathered dinosaurs. It grew about 1.5 meters long. From a fossilized tail segment, evidence shows long filaments like primitive feathers. This suggests that other tyrannosaurs may have been feathered, though the larger ones would have lost this plumage as adults. Overall the skeleton is partially intact, but bears not only the feathers but the complete skull as well.
- Dilong (which means 'emperor-long') is a genus of small, tyrannosauroid dinosaur. The only species is Dilong paradoxus. It is from the Lower Cretaceous Yixian Formation near Lujiatun, Beipiao, in the western Liaoning province of China. It lived about 130 million years ago. It was described by Xu Xing and colleagues in 2004. Dilong paradoxus is one of the earliest and most primitive known tyrannosauroids and had a covering of simple feathers or protofeathers, and scales. See Feathered dinosaurs.

Overall the skeleton is partially intact, but bears not only the feathers but the complete skull as well. Even though it is related to Tyrannosaurus, the joints in its jaw and long three-fingered hands show a more primitive tyrannosaur. And excluding the pelvises named Stokesaurus and Aviatyrannus and the discovery of Guanlong years later, Dilong was the oldest known tyrannosaur.
