  • The Lord of the Rings is the name of a fantasy romance written by J.R.R Tolkien. Although the universe in general is often referred to as Lord of the Rings, or LOTR, there are many other books that make up the canon material, including The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, etc. which is technically the Tolkienverse, although everybody calls it Lord of the Rings anyway due to it being the most popular. The Lord of the Rings was also made into a trilogy of movies and The Hobbit film trilogy, adapted by Peter Jackson. People often use the movie versions of the characters in debates, despite the fact that the novels are the original canon. Many video games spin-offs also exist, as well as a comic book adaption of the Hobbit.
  • The Lord of the Rings is an epic fantasy story by J. R. R. Tolkien, a sequel to his earlier work, The Hobbit. It was published in three volumes in 1954 and 1955. Three movie productions have been made, the first, by animator Ralph Bakshi was released in 1978 (as part one of what was originally to be a two-part adaptation of the story), the second being a 1980 television special, and the third being director Peter Jackson's film trilogy released in 2001, 2002, and 2003.

The book was actually a spin-off from a project of his to create a mythos for the Anglo-Saxon peoples, complete with religions, languages, a thousand years or more of history and a reinterpretation of much of Norse legend. But it did pickup on many of the characters and plot threads of the Hobbit and follow them up a generation or two later.

  • The book the publishers thought they would get was the long expected sequel to his very successful children's book "The Hobbit." What he supplied them with was a book for adults that was so long it had to be printed (and later filmed) in three parts. The story depicts a titanic multigenerational struggle between "good" and "evil" with good represented by certain races and evil by others, it is set in a faux medieval/dark ages, multi racial world where magic exists but conventional religion seems oddly absent (Tolkien was a staunch Roman Catholic but had set his world in a time before Jesus). In a further extolling of Conservative themes Good and especially good leadership is identified with certain hereditary bloodlines. Courage and skill in battle are emphasised in a way that when it was first published in the 20th Century, seemed more than a little familiar to residents of certain parts of central Europe. A popular movie series based on the books was filmed in New Zealand, to reduce some of the inevitable flak about racism some key baddies were given markedly pink faces. The first film includes the greatest horse chase scene ever filmed. Dungeons and Dragons the seminal role playing game was allegedly inspired by the books and particular the races, magic and (lack of) technology. Though they added Religion.

For more information on the fictional universe the story takes place in, including lists of characters and locations, see Middle-earth. The story's titular character is the Dark Lord Sauron of Mordor. The primary villain of the work, he created the One Ring to control nineteen other Rings of Power, and is thus the "Lord of the Rings." Sauron, in turn, was the servant of an earlier Dark Lord, Morgoth (Melkor), who is prominent in Tolkien's The Silmarillion, the history of Middle-earth.

It has since been reprinted numerous times and translated into many languages, becoming one of the most popular and influential works in 20th-century literature. The title of the book refers to the story's main antagonist, the Dark Lord Sauron, who had in an earlier age created the One Ring to rule the other Rings of Power, as the ultimate weapon in his campaign to conquer and rule all of Middle-earth. From quiet beginnings in the Shire, a hobbit land not unlike the English countryside, the story ranges across Middle-earth following the course of the War of the Ring through the eyes of its characters, most notably the hobbits, Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee (Sam), Meriadoc Brandybuck (Merry) and Peregrin Took (Pippin). Along with some of Tolkien's other works, The Lord of the Rings has been subjected to extensive analysis of its themes and origins. Although a major work in itself, the story was only the last movement of a larger work Tolkien had worked on since 1917, in a process he described as mythopoeia. Influences on this earlier work, and on the story of The Lord of the Rings, include philology, mythology, religion and the author's distaste for the effects of industrialization, as well as earlier fantasy works and Tolkien's experiences in World War I. The Lord of the Rings in its turn is considered to have had a great effect on modern fantasy; the impact of Tolkien's works is such that the use of the words "Tolkienian" and "Tolkienesque" has been recorded in the Oxford English Dictionary. The enduring popularity of The Lord of the Rings has led to numerous references in popular culture, the founding of many societies by fans of Tolkien's works, and the publication of many books about Tolkien and his works. The Lord of the Rings has inspired, and continues to inspire, artwork, music, films and television, video games, and subsequent literature. Award-winning adaptations of The Lord of the Rings have been made for radio, theatre, and film.

LOTR is considered to be one of the defining works of modern fantasy, and helped inspire other fantasy worlds like Dungeons and Dragons, Final Fantasy, Sword of Truth, Warcraft, Warhammer Fantasy (which led to Warhammer 40,000), Wheel of Time, etc.
