At its most basic, the task of the Liaison Service of the International is to ensure that the International does not get attacked by other alliances. To achieve this end, the Liaison Service has evolved two basic strategies: obtaining mutual defense treaties with friendly alliances, and maintaining an open door so that alliances can contact the International at any time should a situation arise. The former strategy acts as a deterrent to people who might want to make the International the object of their aggression; the latter strategy ensures not only that someone will be on the scene if a diplomatic crisis or emergency should occur, but also that most alliances will get to know at least one person from the International, which will thus be humanized to them.
