Because of this, Genetics complexes can house untold numbers of stasis cells full of research specimens gathered from across the Galaxy. Filled with advanced technology from "unknown" origins, Gene complexes are capable of replicating, evolving, and/or creating virtually any known biological organism from scratch. These structures can also develop mutants unseen by any other race. Not only that, but the evolutionary process can be cut from a million years to a millionth of a second. Even the zerg can barely compete with the evolutionary enhancements that can developed within these structures. In most cases, these structures are usually "abandoned" for unknown reasons leaving them open for any race capable of understanding the technology to claim it, if they survive what's inside (Gears of War 2: New Hope Research Facility).
