Tables are convenient structures for displaying tabulated data. The wiki core table function was designed to ease their coding without the need for the verbosity associated with HTML. Most wiki sites will recommend the usage of wikitext over HTML. A table has a rich set of properties that allow the coder to present them in a plethora of ways. However, a continuing trend has been to use cascading style sheets (CSS) instead to format their look and feel. It's an age-old debate on which is better. Now on with the show.

  • Tables are convenient structures for displaying tabulated data. Tables are easy to learn and with minimal knowledge one can design an entire document (web page) using them for layout as well as presentation. The problem is they can be very limiting when you want to do certain things that tables just can not do, such as positioning them precisely or manipulating the presentation of the data within them. This is supposedly why CSS was created. It was meant to handle presentation and layout in a centralized manner. Instead of changing all tables across numerous documents from a blue backround to a red background, for example, one need but change a single style sheet and the new changes take effect wherever it's referred to. It makes maintaining large sites a breeze. This document describes the GrayScaleTable class in CSS available to all editors on this site. Its use is a recommendation and not a fast rule. The actual CSS is contained in a file that is protected. It cannot be edited except by authorized adminstrators to guard against vandalism. For those curious, you will find its code at the end of this document. Now on with the show.
