The story is primarily set in the Salinas Valley, California, between the beginning of the twentieth century and the end of World War I. The lives of two families, the Trasks and the Hamiltons, are intertwined. Generations of the family continuously reenact the Biblical story of the fall of Adam and Eve and the rivalry of Cain and Abel with no end in sight.
