  • This is a list of seasons completed by the San Francisco 49ers American football franchise of the National Football League (NFL). The list documents the season-by-season records of the 49ers' franchise from 1946 to present, including postseason records, and league awards for individual players or head coaches. The San Francisco 49ers began play in 1946 as charter members of the All-America Football Conference. When the AAFC folded following the 1950 season, they were one of three teams which joined the NFL. While they had been one of the best teams in the AAFC (second only to the Cleveland Browns in terms of overall record), their success did not follow to the NFL. Prior to the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, they never won their division or conference title, and only finished as high as second once, the 1957 season when they lost a special one-game playoff against the Detroit Lions to determine the Western Conference champion. The 1970s opened with three consecutive division titles, but by 1973 they returned to losing; capturing only one winning season for the rest of the decade. Starting with the 1981 season, however, their fortunes would turn yet again. No team won more Super Bowls during the 1980s, as the 49ers made the playoffs in nine of the decade's ten seasons, and won Super Bowls XVI, XIX, XXIII and XXIV. They added one more NFL championship with Super Bowl XXIX following the 1994 season. Overall the 49ers have a regular-season record of 509 wins, 420 losses, and 15 ties; including games from both the AAFC and the NFL. * Note: The Finish, Wins, Losses, and Ties columns list regular season results and exclude any postseason play. Italicized numbers mean that the records are subject to change each week due to regular season or postseason games being played. 1 Due to a strike-shortened season in 1982, all teams were ranked by conference instead of division.
