Malduin (S. "Gold River") was the largest tributary of the Carnen river and flowed over 50 miles from the foothills of the southern Ephel Dúath, it was so named for the sporadic deposits of gold that could be found some times in the sediments along its banks.Although these had precipitated a fervent though short-lived gold rush, up to the Fourth Age despite considerable searching upriver the fabled vein from which the gold had been washed was still not found. In the early Fourth Age the dwarven mining colony of Krath Zabar was established near the headwaters of the river on the western slopes of the mountains.
