Golin Shel-la was a humanoid male and the leader of the Ennis for several hundred years. Shel-la and his group, as well as Zlangco's Nol-Ennis faction, were exiled to a moon in the Gamma Quadrant by his homeworld Tevlin-De's leaders for not finding a way to stop their long-running war. As an additional punishment, Tevlin-De's leaders created nanite-like bio-mechanical microbes that resurrected people after death, forcing the Ennis and the Nol-Ennis into an eternal war. Shel-la and his people died countless times over decades and were always resurrected and healed of their injuries. (DS9 episode: "Battle Lines", DS9 novel: Rising Son)

  • Golin Shel-la was the leader of the Ennis, a faction who fought the Nol-Ennis on a small penal moon in the Gamma Quadrant. The Ennis and Nol-Ennis were sentenced to eternal warfare on the moon by their planet's leaders to set an example when they could not stop warring. Shel-la could not remember by 2369 what the original war was for. He thought it might have been over water or land. After Kai Opaka died and was revived by the microbes, she remained behind on the moon, intending to negotiate a peace between the warring groups. (DS9: "Battle Lines")

Shel-la and his people died countless times over decades and were always resurrected and healed of their injuries. (DS9 episode: "Battle Lines", DS9 novel: Rising Son) In 2369, Shel-la encountered Benjamin Sisko, Kira Nerys, Julian Bashir and Opaka Sulan when their runabout crashed on the moon. On their urging, Shel-la offered a truce to Zlangco as Bashir was close to finding a way to disable the microbes. The cease fire was unsuccessful and Sisko decided not to give Shel-la the data on how to disable the microbes, as Shel-la was more interested in finally killing the Nol-Ennis than leaving the moon and dying permanently. (DS9 episode: "Battle Lines") Over the next several years, Opaka served as a negotiator between Shel-la and Zlangco. In 2372, she mediated a cease fire that lasted several days. Although it did not last, it marked the end of the fighting. The two factions were later united, becoming known as the Sen Ennis. In 2373, Shel-la took several people to look at the Ascendant Raiq's crashed ship. After Raiq recovered, Shel-la and Zlangco allowed Opaka to meet with her as their leader. Shel-la and the others were later able to leave the moon, as Raiq destroyed the satellite network, disabling the artificial microbes. (DS9 novel: Rising Son)

The Ennis and Nol-Ennis were sentenced to eternal warfare on the moon by their planet's leaders to set an example when they could not stop warring. Shel-la could not remember by 2369 what the original war was for. He thought it might have been over water or land. Artificial microbes were deployed on the moon to prevent the Ennis and Nol-Ennis from permanently dying and avoiding the sentence. Shel-la told Benjamin Sisko, after the runabout USS Yangtzee Kiang crash landed on the moon, that he had died countless times. The artificial microbes also had the effect of making anyone revived by them permanently dependent on them, and the microbes were designed to work only in the moon's ecosystem. This had the effect of preventing anyone who had ever been revived by the microbes from leaving the moon. When Dr. Julian Bashir thought he should perhaps work on reprogramming the microbes to get them not revive the moon's inhabitants, thus ending their torture, Shel-la's first thought was that Bashir's work could be used as the ultimate weapon against the Nol-Ennis, wiping them out once and for all. After Kai Opaka died and was revived by the microbes, she remained behind on the moon, intending to negotiate a peace between the warring groups. (DS9: "Battle Lines") Golin Shel-la was played by actor Jonathan Banks. In the script, he was described as "battle-scarred and tough-looking, but a great weariness surrounds him." Additionally, from the script, his name was pronounced as "GOH-lin shel-LAH". [1]
