The relationship between the Sikhs and the British goes back to mid-1800s when the Khalsa army was incorporated into the East India Company's service from about 1846. It was in April 1946 that orders were issued to raise a Sikh irregular battalion, the Regiment of Ferozepore, for service with the Bengal Army of the Honourable East India Company .
