  • Mrs. Kirkman is a minor character in Fable: The Balverine Order. She is the wife of Mr Kirkman and the mother of both Stephen and Thomas Kirkman. When Thomas was a boy, he went out into the forest with his older brother, Stephen. Unfortunately, a Balverine attacked them and Stephen was killed while Thomas escaped. Upon arriving home and telling his story, nobody believed him. Mrs. Kirkman's health began to fail shortly after and her relationship with her remaining son was destroyed. At the beginning of the novel, Mrs. Kirkman calls Thomas down to her room, where she forgives him for his brother's death. She further states that she was pleased that it was he who escaped, claiming he has a future while his brother was nothing but a dreamer. However, Thomas's joy is short-lived as he realises that his mother believes him to be Stephen, as her husband formulated this lie during her sickness to spare her heart of the death of her favourite son. Heart-broken, Thomas nevertheless plays along in the ruse right up to the moment when his mother dies.
