A human shield is a type of maneuver in which an attacker forcibly pins a hostage from behind while facing another enemy, with the implied threat that if the enemy tries to shoot them, the hostage might end up getting hit as well. In some cases, the attacker may seize the opportunity to attack the hostage while their guard is lowered, or otherwise throw them at the enemy. They also may point a weapon at their hostage on their most vulnerable points as further insurance.

- The Human Shield feature is a game-play tactic in Hitman: Blood Money and Hitman: Absolution. It was introduced in the former. To use someone as a human shield, Agent 47 must approach an NPC (or target) from behind, and press the bound action key to use them as a shield to protect 47 from enemies to deal with armed confrontations. Agent 47 can also knock shields out.
- Using a human shield is a tactic used by individuals with the objective of protecting themselves by using another individual as protection. Players can take enemies as a human shield in order to either escape areas or as extra 'health' in order to pursue the others in open combat. Taking an enemy as a human shield can create a dynamic sense of tactical awareness, or improvised means to get through an area. Depending on the title, the effectiveness of taking an enemy as a human shield can vary between Splinter Cell titles.

| - Hours later, Rona wakes. "My [lady/lord]. I killed the blackguard... but I think it was only a matter of time before this happened."
- "Who do you think sent this assassin, Rona? The Silent Lady?"
- "We have told no one what we know of her, not even the Turners. But she is no fool, this one--" Maester Lucas stops her. "You must rest."
- "We cannot afford to waste a minute. Rona, you must return to your duties now."
- "The maester is right. We will face this problem after you are fully recovered."
- "The guards were at their posts, most of the house asleep. This is our enemy's work--" Maester Lucas stops her. "Please, rest."
- "How did an assassin get so close? Have we another traitor in our midst?"

Taking an enemy as a human shield can create a dynamic sense of tactical awareness, or improvised means to get through an area. Depending on the title, the effectiveness of taking an enemy as a human shield can vary between Splinter Cell titles. Normally in first four titles, Essentials and Blacklist the enemy tends not to fire while the player is using NPC as shield. In Conviction however, enemies seems not care their own teammate and still firing; this means the human shield is a lot less reliable and only buy player some time to shoot back without the fear of getting killed. If Sam wishes to stay undetected, this tactic is rarely used as it is easy to attract attention and even cause alarms, which is not a situation the player wants, especially in first two games. In Pandora Tomorrow and Essentials however, Sam must use Human shield to grab Sadono alive and at the same time, keep him from being shot by his bodyguards.
