Although popular legend states that the light bulb was invented by Thomas Edison this is not true. Light bulbs had existed for nearly 40 years by the time Edison became involved. (Edison certainly developed the first light bulb that was commercially viable however).

  • Although popular legend states that the light bulb was invented by Thomas Edison this is not true. Light bulbs had existed for nearly 40 years by the time Edison became involved. (Edison certainly developed the first light bulb that was commercially viable however). Although there were numerous experiments with electric light as far back as 1802, the first true light bulb came in 1840 when British scientist Warren de la Rue enclosed a coiled platinum filament in a vacuum tube and passed an electric current through it. Although an efficient design, the cost of the platinum made it impractical for commercial use.
