- Screamo is a subgenre of Emotive Hardcore and had a relatively large following on Long Island. In recent years, however, it has been waning or has been incorporated into other genres like pop punk. Characteristic of the genre are screaming vocals, harmonized guitars, rhythmic bass and fast-paced riffs. Screamo has been described as "mixing the literate, poetic lyrics of emo punk with a harsher and more metallic brand of sonic thrash" as well as using screaming vocals "as a kind of crescendo element, a sonic weapon to be trotted out when the music and lyrics (every bit as evolved and autobiographically sincere as emo's were) reach a particular emotional pitch".

During the 1990s, in the New York/New Jersey area, bands like Saetia (a New York City screamo band), Native Nod (New York/New Jersey band who's "Today Puberty, Tomorrow the World" is considered a milestone in emotive hardcore), and Rye Coalition (from Jersey) brought the San Diego screamo sound to the east coast. The ABC No Rio Club Scene helped forwrad the screamo sound. Today, on Long Island bands like Break Your Silence, Casari, From Autumn to Ashes, and Her Chance to Dream bring the largest groups of people to shows out of bands within the Screamo genre. Also, bands like Casari, who may have started out with a Screamo style probably have moved on to Metalcore or other heavier genres.
