Ian Mackenzie, or "Mac the Knife", was a Scottish Human male who lived in the late 23rd century. He was a pirate. Mackenzie was born in the isolated Federation colony of Inverness, where he earned a living trapping and skinning kossets in the wilderness. However, suspicions arose that he gained most of his kosset skins by poaching them from other trapper's catches, and murdered those who caught him red-handed. While Mackenzie was visiting the colony's starport, a police officer attempted to question him over the accusations. In response, Mackenzie attacked him, and fled aboard an Orion trading vessel.

While Mackenzie was visiting the colony's starport, a police officer attempted to question him over the accusations. In response, Mackenzie attacked him, and fled aboard an Orion trading vessel. Eventually he came to the pirate ship Werewolf and was hired on as a member of the boarding party. He worked for money, but enjoyed the killing he engaged in, preferably with a dagger. However, he preferred an unfair fight against a helpless merchant vessel’s crew than against an armed and ready equal opponent. He would surrender against overwhelming odds, at least until he could get the upper hand. He served in this capacity for at least 4 years. In reference stardate 2/1412 (circa 2273), Mackenzie was aged 41. He was exceptionally large, at 6'5" and over 235 pounds, but remained very strong and fit, with excellent speed and coordination. He spoke in a loud voice with a Scottish accent that grew stronger when stressed or drunk. He wore a full red beard, and carried two daggers: one a broad-bladed dagger, and a spare sheathed behind his neck. (FASA RPG module: Orion Ruse)
