abstract
  • The Kamuneko class is a class of nuclear-powered submarines (based on the ex-American Ohio class) retrofitted with fusion generators, used by the East Asian Federation Naval Self-Defense Force, in conjunction with the Federation Air Forces. The Naval Self-Defense Force has four Kamuneko class submarines, each armed with 24 experimental Aeros SAB missiles. The Kamuneko class is named after the lead ship of the class, the NSDF Kamuneko (ESBF-01), formerly the USS Louisiana (SSBN-743). A fast-response platform for Aeros anti-aircraft missiles, it was heavily modified to value speed over stealth after its initial purchase in 2005. As a part of the purchase agreement, General Dynamics issued a special manufacturing license to allow Kawasaki Shipbuilding to construct three additional submarines domestically. The first of these domestically built submarines, the NSDF Keungae (ESBF-02), was laid down the same year, and launched in 2009. The two ships are the sole missile submarines in the possession of the Naval Self Defense Force.
