A trade union was established in the Golden port which was formed to protect the workers in the shipyards. When a union member was illegally dismissed for having to visit his dying son, the Union voted unanimously to strike. James Smith, when notified of the strike ordered the union members to return to work or face the consequences of "being disobedient".
