Andrew Downie (born 26th May 1922 in Edinburgh as "Andrew Fraser", died 15th April 2009 in Kent) played Old Folks’ Home Supervisor Mr Charlesworth on Coronation Street in August 1965. He began his working life working in a bacteriological laboratory and as a result was not allowed to volunteer for the forces in the World War II, despite applying three times. A talented singer, he studied at the Royal College of Music and the Paris Conservatoire. His acting career began at the 1947 Edinburgh Festival in The Thrie Estates and as well as acting he appeared in several Gilbert and Sullivan productions.
