Kelbonite was a refractory mineral capable of deflecting or interfering with certain types of scans and energy beams, including the transporter. It could be found naturally within caverns and tunnels on many planets. The Ba'ku planet had mountains containing kelbonite ore. These mountains were used as refuge in order to prevent the Son'a from forcefully removing the Ba'ku from their home. (Star Trek: Insurrection)

("Star Trek: Insurrection")

  • Kelbonite is a refractory metal which is capable of deflecting or interfering with scans and energy beams, such as transporters, and can be found naturally on many planets. (TNG episode: "Silicon Avatar") The comet used by the parasites to head towards Trill in the 23rd century had traces of kelbonite in its structure. (DS9 - The Lives of Dax short story: "Sins of the Mother") The planet Naia VII was rich in kelbonite, among other valuable materials. A Starfleet Corps of Engineers mining operation there in 2368 excavated these, which were vital for Starfleet to rebuild its strength following the Battle of Wolf 359. (TNG - Assimilation² comic: "Issue 2") The Obsidian Order used kelbonite plating in the Grennokar facility on Harkoum. (DS9 novel: Warpath) The mountains on Ba'ku colony world contained kelbonite ore, which in 2375, proved useful in preventing the Ba'ku from being forcibly relocated from their world by the Son'a. (TNG novelization: Insurrection) In the mirror universe the walls of the Sakethan burial mounds located on New T'Karath contained traces of kelbonite mixed with limestone. In September 2371, this impeded Jean-Luc Picard's ability to be able to transport himself away with a segment of the Stone of Gol. (TNG - Mirror Universe novel: The Worst of Both Worlds)

  • Kelbonite was a refractory mineral capable of deflecting or interfering with certain types of scans and energy beams, including the transporter. It could be found naturally within caverns and tunnels on many planets. Kelbonite alone was not enough to prevent the Crystalline Entity from locating and absorbing organic matter, as tunnels on Forlat III lined with kelbonite offered no protection. However, it was believed that kelbonite in combination with fistrium blocked the Entity's ability to collect organic matter, as colonists on Melona IV survived an attack by hiding within caves abundant in both minerals. (TNG: "Silicon Avatar" ) The Ba'ku planet had mountains containing kelbonite ore. These mountains were used as refuge in order to prevent the Son'a from forcefully removing the Ba'ku from their home. (Star Trek: Insurrection)
