Abihu was the second son of Aaron the Priest and his wife Elisheba, and the nephew of Nahshon, leader of the tribe of Judah (Exodus 6:23; Numbers 2:3). Abihu served as a priest under his father until he offered "strange fire" before God with his older brother Nadab (Leviticus 10.1). When he offered this fire God sent forth a fire that utterly consumed both Nadab and Abihu. Before his death Abihu went with the seventy elders of Israel when they went with Moses and saw the God of Israel (Exodus 24.9-11).

He is most notable because he offered before God "strange fire" (incense that was not according to the Law's specification) with his older brother Nadab (Leviticus 10.1). When he offered this incense God sent forth a fire that utterly consumed both Nadab and Abihu. Aaron was commanded not to mourn at all for his sons, who were justly executed for disobeying the commandment of God.
  • This was the name of the second of the sons of Aaron. Along with his three brothers he was consecrated to the priest's office. With his father and elder brother he accompanied the seventy elders part of the way up the mount with Moses (Exodus 24:1,9).

This is a compound word meaning, "He is my father," or more literally, "My father is he." It comes from the words אבי (my father) and הוא (Third Masculine Singular Pronoun: he).

On one occasion, he and Nadab his brother offered incense in their censers filled with "strange" (i.e., common) fire, i.e., not with fire taken from the great brazen altar, etc.), and for this offense they were struck dead, and were taken out and buried without the camp. It is probable that when they committed this offense they were intoxicated, for immediately after is given the law prohibiting the use of wine or strong drink to the priests.
