abstract
| - The May 31, 2024 Southeastern tornado outbreak was a significant tornado outbreak that impacted the states of Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, and the Carolinas on May 31, 2024. The outbreak occurred while the significantly more prolific May 2024 Super Outbreak was ongoing roughly 450 miles to the west, and produced a total of 38 tornadoes along with powerful straight-line winds and damaging flash floods. The system produced one EF4 and three EF3 tornadoes, all but one of which occurred in Tennessee. The outbreak was responsible for five fatalities; two additional fatalities occurred as a result of flash flooding produced by the storm system. The outbreak produced the first violent tornado in the "Dixie Alley" region in the month of May since 2008, and was the first significant tornado outbreak to occur concurrently with a larger outbreak. Although considerable damage occurred in several cities and towns, the outbreak received relatively little national media coverage in the wake of the more destructive and deadlier Super Outbreak.
