Erzählt wird die Geschichte des Titelhelden Harry James Potter, eines Schülers des britischen Zaubererinternats Hogwarts, und seiner Konfrontationen mit dem bösen Magier Lord Voldemort und dessen Gefolgsleuten, den so genannten Todessern. Jeder der sieben Bände beschreibt ein Schul- und Lebensjahr von Harry Potter, beginnend kurz vor seinem elften Geburtstag. Band 1 erschien 1997 (deutsch 1998), Band 7 erschien am 21. Juli 2007 auf Englisch und am 27. Oktober 2007 auf Deutsch.
