| - Not much is known about Emil Broaden, the British Talent known as "The Shade". He had the power of insubstantiality, which allowed him to voluntarily "phase out" of the world, along with anything that he was touching. On January 1st, 1942, at 10 minutes before 7 AM, he sacrificed himself by touching the Doppelganger (Germany's top Talent spy) along with the bomb The Doppelganger was carrying in the West Wing of the White House. This caused the bomb to detonate without harming anyone else in the area, while The Shade and The Doppelganger were instantly killed.

Following his death, President and Mrs. Roosevelt had a special plaque erected at the west gate of the White House to commemorate the sacrifice of The Shade which states: "For Captain Emil Broaden of the British Army, known as "The Shade", whose decisive action on January 1, 1942 caused the world to stop for a moment in admiration, respect, and awe at the heroism not often seen in one so young." Every New Year's Day, a silent explosion occurs at ten to seven in the morning. Talents present at these "ghost explosions" feel a brief twinge as if an invisible Talent activated a powerful ability. In Layflat Wild Talents, Emil Broaden and Charity Swift, one of the PC Talents who is also known as "Shade", were involved in a romance on New Year's Eve, which turned into tragedy only because of the events of New Year's Day, 1942. The events are chronicled in Charity Swift's character journal and during Season 1 Episode 3.
