"Handmaidens of the Spirit" were a sort of religious order of the House of Universal Devotion. According to the teachings of House founder Samuel Jones, each person could achieve the status of Gods. However, people, especially women, should not deny themselves of worldly pleasures. Handmaidens were encouraged to be sexually free. Benjamin Joshua Morris (among others) alledged that the handmaidens existed solely to gratify Jones. Morris claimed to have substantial evidence that Jones had fathered several children upon the victimized handmaidens.
