abstract
| - Rovers were eliminated from the 2011–12 FA Cup at the third round stage, when they suffered a 3–1 defeat at the hands of Aston Villa. Despite playing well at times, The Pirates were outclassed by their Premier League opposition in a game screened live on ESPN. Villa took the lead in the first half through Marc Albrighton, and Gabriel Agbonlahor and Ciaran Clark both netted after the break to make it 3–0 to the visitors. A goal from substitute Scott McGleish right at the end of the 90 minutes looked to be nothing more than a consolation, but when Rovers were awarded a penalty two minutes into stoppage time it looked like they may give their opponents an uncomfortable end to the game. McGleish's spot kick went straight to the keeper however, and the game ended 3–1. This was the first game since Paul Buckle was relieved of his managerial duties, and was caretaker-boss Shaun North's first game as manager of a senior team.
