Cefotaxime is an antibiotic related to cephalosporin. It works against a very wide range of bacteria, including those that are often resistant to other antibiotics. It was developed in the late 1980s and was the first antibiotic of its kind to be introduced into the United States. Because it works against a wide array of infections, it is often a good first choice against an unknown infection. However, because it does not pass well through the blood-brain barrier, it is usually not used as a drug of first resort against meningitis. It also does not work against pseudomonas or enterococcus.

Cefotaxime has to be injected, and as such is usually not a good choice for home use. Along with the possibility of an allergic reaction, it can also cause inflammation at the injection site, rash, and digestive tract symptoms. It works by inhibiting both the division of the bacteria as well as certain critical parts of the bacteria.
