  • Van Hohenheim (also referred to as Hohenheim of Light, born as Slave Number 23) is a fictional character in the anime and manga series Fullmetal Alchemist and the father of protagonists, Edward and Alphonse Elric. He takes his name from real life occultist Phillip Von Hohenheim, otherwise known as Theophrastus Philippus Aureolus Bombastus von Hohenheim, or, Paracelsus. Though he is given a vastly different background and representation between the manga and the first animated series, there remain a few similarities: he is a brilliant and well-known alchemist, he abandoned his sons and their mother, Trisha, several years before the start of either series, and Edward holds a grudge against Hohenheim for abandoning his mother, which he believes contributed to her death.
  • He was born sometime in the mid 1500s. Through various cliche methods, he gained "immortality". In the late 1800s, he married and had two sons: Edward Elric, and Alphonse Elric. After discovering his wife cheating on him with younger (literally by multiple centuries) men, he ran off. The other men got tired of her, leaving her a single mother. She committed suicide that day. 18 years later, through magic alchemy Hohenheim ended up in Munich in the 1930s. He was killed by the Nazis due to having blond hair and brown eyes instead of blond hair and blue eyes.

Despite disappearing suddenly during their infancy, Hohenheim returns during the course of the series in order to right the wrongs of his mysterious past.
