A Mwanga Stick is a multi-purpose woodwind/percussion instrument made from a somewhat flexible wood similar to bamboo. It is between 12 - 15 feet long, with the top end much bigger around than the bottom end, and curved at the bottom 3 feet. Two strings run from that end part all the way up to about 3 feet from the top end, where they are attached a hand-breath apart. Mwanga Sticks are not easy to learn to play, since they are so versatile and require great skill.

One can blow across a mouthpiece attached to its side, or drum on its outer hull, or pluck the strings. The player can change the pitch of the strings by adjusting the tautness of them, when pushing the end of the stick down with his foot. Mwanga Sticks are not easy to learn to play, since they are so versatile and require great skill.
