In women's gymnastics, several vaults have a half twist from the springboard to the vault table; in men's, a quarter twist is common. Tsukahara vaults in women's gymnastics begin with a half twist on because, historically, women vaulted over a "horse" -- a pommel horse without handles -- that was placed with its length perpendicular to the runway. Tsukaharas for men begin with a quarter twist on because their horse was placed with its length along the runway. However, all Tsukaharas must have a back salto off the board. Vaults with a half twist onto the table and no somersault off are considered handsprings in women's gymnastics.
