Synopsis
| - DOMINIQUE LAVEAU: VOODOO CHILD is the story of a half-breed, outcast and heir to the Voodoo Queenship of New Orleans, if she can live long enough to claim her birthright. New Orleans is the most haunted city in America: a town of centuries-old ghosts and newly drowned spirits; where vampires, voodoo spirits and loups-garous make their home. Ruling over this all are the powerful Voodoo Queens, whose influence stretches into politics, business and crime as they maintain a delicate balance between the mortal and supernatural worlds. But in the aftermath of Katrina, all that has changed, for someone or something has murdered the Voodoo Queen and most of her court. The number one suspect is Dominique Laveau, a grad student at Tulane who is about to discover that her entire life has been a lie. Now Dominique must forge alliances with those out to kill her while seeking to uncover the truth behind the royal murders, as she is ultimately forced to deal with a destiny she could never have imagined. Voodoo Child is a new monthly series written by Selwyn Seyfu Hinds, former editor-in-chief of The Source magazine, award-winning author, journalist and TV producer, with art by Milestone Media co-founder Denys Cowan and covers by Rafael Grampá.
- Just four months after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, Dominique Laveau is still there, running a project to rebuild the neighbourhood of Tremé as part of her master's program at Tulane University. Unfortunately, tonight, something has gone horribly wrong. As the rain pours down, Dominique returns to the building site to find the other students in the project brutally murdered by some kind of werewolf. Now, that creature is pursuing her.
Desperately, Dominique hides in Louie Armstrong Park, and calls her friend Allan from the police for help. When he realizes that she is in danger - which is not uncommon, given the current state of affairs - he tells her to run to Iberville, where he is currently on patrol. Unfortunately, the monster catches up to her. As the creature prepares to rip her apart, her fear hits a peak, and a blast of venomous snakes knocks the werewolf back. She escapes to Iberville as someone watches from the shadows.
In Iberville, Dominique struggles to catch her breath enough to coherently explain what she has just gone through to Allan. She's not sure if she could explain, in any case. Before long, they are interrupted by gang members from the Dooney Boys, who open fire on them. Allan gets Dominique to cover, and orders her to go straight to his precinct while he holds the thugs back. Dominique cuts through the Saint Louis Cemetary, with the mysterious figure following her.
Elsewhere, in the Quarter, Chancellor Malenfant is a powerful man, who has ties with senators and oil companies. He leads a Voodoo cult, where he intends to bring forth Lord Ogun by preparing a pure vessel in the form of a young boy. Lord Ogun is not pleased to have been summoned when the thing he requested - the child of Marie Laveau, a Voodoo queen - is not there for him. Malefant promises that they will have the child soon.
In the cemetery, Dominique is stopped in her tracks when she comes to the crypt of Marie Laveau. Marie was reputed to be a Voodooo Queen, and people often come to the crypt for answers to their questions and for hope. Dominique is one such a person now, as she recollects their coincidental shared surname. She begs the spirit to tell her who she is.
Suddenly, the ground under Dominiques feet falls away, and she finds herself as a spirit in a scene from the past. She stands in a house filled with horribly mutilated bodies. In the vision, a man suddenly bursts in, seeking the queen. He finds his brother Amedee murdered and fears the worst for Marie. The fears prove valid when he finds Marie's corpse in her room, head severed from her body. The man vows to destroy the ones responsible. Suddenly, he senses Dominique's presence, and she is pulled out of the vision.
Dominique decides to stay with her Aunt Giselle, but arrives to find the woman dying from severe injuries. The woman manages to cryptically suggest that there is a secret about Dominique's heritage.
As the woman who had been a mother to her for years dies in her arms, Dominique looks up to see the mysterious man who had been following her preparing to kill her.
