Schurig has led the Washburn football program to a new level after building on a 2004 Mineral Water Bowl Championship. The Ichabods posted their first NCAA Division II Playoff appearance as well as Washburn’s first MIAA Championship in 2005. Schurig earned the MIAA Coach of the Year for his efforts leading the Ichabods that season. The conference championship was the first by the Ichabods since the 1983 season. He was also named the AFCA’s Region 3 Coach of the Year. Prior to becoming the Washburn head man, Schurig spent nine years under Chuck Broyles at Pittsburg State University.
