I makes sense to me. You go into a fast food resturant to order something to fill your stomach. A couple double cheeseburgers at 700 calories each and large fries at 800 calories... then a drink.. Hmmm you've already exceeded your calorie intake for the day, do you really want to add another 500 calories with a sugar drink or would your stomach be just as satisfied with a diet drink... Do the math.
