The Isle of Wight and the adjacent Hampshire shore formed a Jutish kingdom in the Anglo-Saxon period. Along with Sussex, the Isle of Wight was one of the two pagan Anglo-Saxon kingdoms remaining in the late seventh century. Jutes from the dominant Kingdom of Kent occupied the island in the late seventh century and allowed the dynasty to rule with reduced rank.
