  • On a very windy day in the Smurf Village, Vanity is busy admiring himself in a big mirror in his house when he accidentally shatters it. He quickly goes to his dresser to pull out his hand mirror to continue his gazing when the door of his house opens, breaking that mirror as well. He goes outside to tell Papa Smurf about what just happened, and as Papa Smurf rises from the tree he was sitting under, he bangs his head against a branch and knocks a bunch of bad apples down from the tree. He suspects something is wrong and goes to his laboratory to look through his books to find out what it is, why they're starting to have a run of bad luck. In his search for the answers, though, the candle goes out, causing him to bump around in the dark, and when he pulls another book from the bookshelf, it causes an avalanche of books to fall down on him. In one of the books that just happens to open in front of him, Papa Smurf reads that in the 654th year of Smurf, an unusual eclipse of the June moon will bring ill winds, great misfortune, and a hundred years of bad luck. To stop this from happening, he continues to read, he needs to perform the Dance Of 100 Smurfs. This makes Papa Smurf wonder if there's even a hundred Smurfs in the village to perform this ritual, so he goes to find out. He starts with Painter Smurf, who he bumps into while on a ladder, causing a bucket of paint to fall on him. Then there's Poet, who slips on a banana peel and falls into a puddle of mud. Vanity and Jokey are down by the river, with Jokey trying to pull one of his "surprises" on Vanity but becomes disappointed when it doesn't go off except when he's holding it. Vanity, while gazing at himself in the river, is inspired to go make a special mirror. Papa Smurf then finds Hefty doing some weightlifting, and Brainy taking a brief flight after nagging Hefty about his exercises. Then he comes across Handy working on an invention with Grouchy and Clumsy watching him. Vanity passes by and takes the hammer from Handy's hand, causing him to wreck the machine he was working on. This distracts Papa Smurf to the point where he almost loses count of how many Smurfs there are in the village so far. Vanity brings a piece of unbreakable silver into his house and starts hammering it out for his new mirror. The sound of the hammering is so irritating it makes Smurfette hold her ears, and it causes Greedy's cake to collapse, though it doesn't affect Lazy in the slightest. The hammering continues on in the night, making even Papa Smurf upset that he can't get any sleep. Then Vanity announces that he's finished with the hammering, which makes some of the Smurfs sigh with relief...until they start hearing a more annoying sound of Vanity polishing the piece of silver. Although Lazy is still unaffected by the noise, it makes the other Smurfs come into Vanity's house and tell him to save the polishing until morning, with Hefty adding "or else!" By morning, as the other Smurfs except for Lazy arise from their beds barely getting enough sleep, Papa Smurf has finished his count of the Smurfs in the village and realizes to his dismay that there's only 99 Smurfs, so they can't do the Dance Of 100 Smurfs. Vanity gets told by his fellow Smurfs to take his mirror-polishing elsewhere, so he goes out into the forest to complete the job, saying that he won't bother anyone there. No sooner does he complete the polishing, however, that the rain starts, and Vanity quickly rushes to bring his mirror back to the village when lightning strikes it, causing the piece of silver to fall out of its frame. Vanity goes over to where he dropped the frame and believes that the mirror is still intact, though he doesn't realize that the silver plating has dropped out and he is now looking at an identical Smurf who acts like a mirror reflection of himself. He soon realizes what has happened when he speaks and the identical Smurf speaks the same words in backwards order, and runs to the village to find Papa Smurf with his copy following him. Back in the village, the Smurfs have gathered together in Papa Smurf's house to tell about more bad luck that has happened to them when Vanity and his double show up, with Vanity trying to tell Papa Smurf what had happened and his double saying the same thing in reverse. Papa Smurf realizes that good luck has happened because Vanity's mirror reflection has come to life and has now become the hundredth Smurf, so they could now practice the Dance Of 100 Smurfs. With the Smurfs lined up in formation, Papa Smurf directs them all through the steps, which most of the Smurfs are able to do flawlessly, but Vanity and his double are having trouble trying to imitate because Vanity's double does the mirror opposite of what Vanity is doing. Papa Smurf halts the practice session when he sees what Vanity's double is doing, but seeing that he is the only hundredth Smurf they have, they must find a way he can work in sync with the other Smurfs performing the dance. Hefty tries to blame Vanity for the whole mess, but Vanity defends himself and so also does his double. However, even Vanity gets fed up with having to live with a double that acts like a mirror reflection of himself and tells his double to get lost when he stumbles out the door of his house with Vanity closing it on him. The next day, as Papa Smurf sees that the hundredth Smurf is missing and sends the Smurfs to go out into the forest to find him, that same Smurf is heading back to the place where Vanity dropped his mirror. He finds the silver plating and tries to go back into it when lightning strikes it again...only this time it causes Vanity's double to act more like the original. Papa Smurf, Smurfette, and Vanity find the double at the mirror, talking like an independent Smurf instead of a mirror reflection. Papa Smurf sees that this Smurf will be able to dance the Dance Of 100 Smurfs like everyone else and quickly take him back to the village. With the Smurfs setting up a string of lantern decorations at night for the Dance Of 100 Smurfs, Smurfette is glad to see that there will be no more bad luck, and so also is Papa Smurf...until he sees another copy of himself speaking things in backwards order. Papa Smurf realizes that it's Jokey playing a joke on him and gives him a flying boot. Then Papa Smurf directs all the Smurfs, including the hundredth Smurf, in the Dance Of 100 Smurfs as the story ends.
