abstract
  • Jesús Cohn Martinelli (born July 8, 1950) is the current President of Chile, and a former deputy and lawyer. He was elected on February 16, 2014 in a runoff and was inaugurated on April 10, 2014 in Santiago. He became the first Radical elected to the Presidency of Chile since Juan Esteban Montero in 1944. Cohn served as President of the Radical Party of Chile since 2007 until his victory in the 2014 elections. Before, he was a two-time failed Presidential candidate, running in 2002 and 2006, in which he became the first PR candidate to advance to the runoff, a feat he would repeat in 2014. Martinelli was a member of the Communist Youth when he studied at university but before graduation fled Chile to Mexico City, where he studied law. He later worked for the government-in-exile in New York before returning to Chile in 1988 during the Second Rehabilitation to work as a lawyer. He joined the PR in 1990 and ran for the Chamber of Deputies in 1994, winning his election. He was selected as party candidate by internal primary in 2001 and 2005, and led the PR to strong vote totals in both elections. In 2007, he was elected President of the Radical Party and he oversaw the Congressional campaign of 2010 that gave the PR the third-most seats in the Congress of any party, behind only the Christian Democrats and Party for Social Democracy.
