  • The siege of Narva was a pivotal battle in Alexander Nevksy's northern campaigns. It marked the first siege mounted by the new Russian cavalry armies, and also secured the city of Novgorod from Danish assualt. After the first battle of Narva, Grand Duke Nevksy marched his army to the castle at Narva, and laid siege to it in 1254 AD. However, they would be forced to maintain the siege for another year whilst catapults were brough up from Novgorod. In 1256 AD, Nevsky launched his assault. Four catapults attacked and destroyed a large section of the castle walls. The Russian cavalry, mainly Boyars and militia, charged the breach, and stormed it, slaughtering the Dannish viking defenders. The Russians pressed on to the centre of the city, where they fought the Dannish to the last man, anhiliating them. However, the victory came at a high cost, and the Russian's lost two hundred cavalry, half their force. This battle convinced Nevksy of the necessity of horse mounted archers, who could have easily broken the defenders and stopped the cavalry becoming bogged down in a prolonged fight.
