Claymation is a term copyrighted in 1978 by Will Vinton to describe his popular method of clay animation. While he was not the first one to use clay for animation, a Gumby TV series in the ‘50’s used the technique, Vinton coined the phrase in his 1978 documentary of the same name which showed the technique he used. It is easily noticeable for its aesthetic and tends to resemble pixilation, except without the use of human bodies. In addition the many films done by Vinton the Wallace and Gromit cartoons are made in claymation. See also: Will Vinton
