The Principality of the Ionian Islands was a protectorate of Austria between 1825 and 1829. It was ruled by the future George I of Greece, whose government handled internal affairs, and finances. Austria handled defense, foreign affairs, trade etc. An Austrian Military Governor represented the government of Austria on the island. Following the independence of Greece in 1826, and the establishment of a monarchy in 1829, George I of Ionia became the first king of Greece.
