NATO was founed in 1965 by the USA, Alaska, Turkey, Portugal, England and Colombia, and has expanded to ten members since then, adding Oceania, Iceland, Syria and Egypt in the late 1980's and early 1990's.

This ten-member organization, which is the backbone of the nameless but recognized geopolitical bloc aligned with the United States in the Cold War, operates on a mutual defense understanding in an effort to stand united against the French-led Council of Industrial Countries. NATO was founed in 1965 by the USA, Alaska, Turkey, Portugal, England and Colombia, and has expanded to ten members since then, adding Oceania, Iceland, Syria and Egypt in the late 1980's and early 1990's. NATO's permanent headquarters are located in London, England, but the Chief Officer of NATO is a position which rotates every two years between a highly-regarded diplomat from one of the member states. Current Chief Officer Ali Mehmed Hussein of Syria was sworn in in December of 2008 and he will step down in favor of Jose de Villa Cortez of Colombia in December of 2010.
